Ma fin est mon commencement

Today I am starting something new. I’m launching this new website! With the help of expert web designer Mary Bella the new site launches with current photos (of my mature self) , a refreshed blog where you can read and leave your own thoughts and comments, a complete catalogue of compositions with links to publishers, and a gallery of videos, recordings and photographs. You can check out Mary’s company Maestra Web Design on her website. I can highly recommend her work. She is thoroughly skilled in web design, and she’s also very patient with someone who is just learning : )

Today something also ends, concluding a position I’ve been busy doing for 4 years. I leave the position of Graduate Program Director in the music department of York University’s School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design. It has been a real joy to journey with our grad students along their various paths of discovery. I applaud our grad students for their resilience throughout the COVID years, and for their initiative in revitalizing the Graduate Music Student Association which has sponsored weekly colloquia and social events since 2020. My position as GPD is taken up tomorrow by Dr. Sherry Johnson who will guide the grad program for the next three years. Sherry brings not only her expertise in ethnomusicology and research methodologies, but also her passion for performing Celtic fiddle music and dance.

As for me, I return to being an ordinary professor, looking forward to engaging with student composers, performers, and researchers, with considerably fewer forms to sign!

Please enjoy exploring this new website and blog. The work of so many people is represented here – performers, publishers, conductors, recording engineers, audience members, donors, patrons, poets – I hope this virtual space can continue to bring people together.

Have a great Canada Day weekend!

I am delighted that you titled your first blog entry after one of my favourite pieces. Sadly, I have never performed it. Maybe there is still time. 🤔

  2. You are always moving with excellence in the world, Stephanie and I see you are at it again!. Inspiring and I’m sure also a continued treat to be on this journey with you. As an aside, thank you for your stellar work as GPD for the past 4 years and your willingness to stay for an extra year. Characteristically helpful of you! All the best as you launch this!

    1. Karen, it has been one of the greatest pleasures of this job to work closely with you and to get to know you better. Thanks for all your hard work and commitment to York’s music department!
